Matariki!

Matariki Week!

On Week 9 Term 2 , for homework we had to decide if you think Matariki should replace Queens Birthday Weekend. As Matariki becomes more popular many people think that Matariki should replace Queen’s Birthday as a public holiday.
So we had to:
1. Outline three advantages and disadvantages of this happening
2. Present an illustrated story of a story about Matariki.

Overall Room 19 thought that it was a bad idea to replace Queen’s Birthday with Matariki because it would make the royal family feel ignored, it would make people in New Zealand who like royalty feel ignored as well and other countries who don't know what Matariki is. But the advantages were that people thought it would be a more New Zealand related holiday, it would make people from other countries and cultures learn more about the Maori culture and New year.

FIFA Under 20's

FIFA U20 World Cup

On week seven Room 19s Homework was to write about the FIFA under 20 World Cup 2015. You had to write about the country you think will win, the benefits for New Zealand and a player from the country you think will win. We could hardly agree what country would win but we could all agree that it had benefits like a major tourist attraction and FIFA recognizing New Zealand.

Billy T James

Billy T James
This week for homework we had to write about the great comedian of New Zealand, Billy T James. We had to write about what influence he had on New Zealand. Billy T James lived from 17 January 1948- 7 August 1991 in Waikato. In 1991 he had a heart attack. After he died NZ citizens made an comedy award for him. It was called the Billy T Award and the winners get a yellow towel instead of a  trophy. In 2010 the Billy T James movie was released, it was called the Billy T:Te Movie and was a big hit.

BILLY T JAMES
Billy T James was a well known New Zealand comedian. He was incredibly talented and didn't mind making fun of his culture. This was a big part of Career pretending/ imitating his and others cultures. He also did a lot of covers from famous songs which were really funny. Comedy was only part of his career along with singing and acting. So we were very glad we got to look into his life a bit more. We got to watch some of his acts and they were really entertaining. Sadly he passed away in 1991 but his comedy still lives on until this day.

Watch him in action down below!!!

Pink Shirt Day!

On Friday the 22nd it was the day to wear everything pink from pink shirts to pink hairspray. Everyone had a great time dressing up to show that they were against bullying. The school had a competition that was which class would have the most students turn up to a gold coin donation zumba class. Almost everyone including the staff had something pink on them. At the end of the day everyone got together to make a person wearing a pink top out of the people that were nearly completely pink!

Winter Sport

Every second Thursday, we go off to winter sport. We got to pick 3 activities we wanted to do and we got put in one of them. There is gymnastics, funky fitness, inline hockey, badminton, ASB centre, squash, turf sports and water works. They are all at different places. The funky fitness is at City Fitness gym in Johnsonville, water works is at Keith Spry and so on. Half the school does it one week, the other half goes the next week so that there isn't an overload of people at one activity. Everyone enjoys winter sport and we can’t wait to do it again this week and choose another activity next term!

Wiri prisoners to get tablets for studies

Last week our class had homework on the Kohuora prison, they have  ideas of providing education and utilities like computers, tablets, desks and industrial equipment. We had a discussion and shared our opinions on whether or not they should get new flash equipment in order to educate themselves. Most of our class was sitting on the fence and that this privilege should only be given to a few specific people. Others thought that it’s a good idea because it’ll give them more opportunities, and giving them a fresh start. Others thought that some people would take advantage of the education and nice utilities that they have. Overall the discussion went on great and we never had a point where everyone agreed on something which makes an interesting discussion.

Raroa Cross Country

On the 29 of April Raroa school had their cross country! All the houses competed for the House Shield. In the end the final placings were 1: Rawhiti 2:Tonga 3: Raki and 4: Uru
Everybody who participated had a really great time and all the year 7’s cant wait to do it next year!!!!  We had lots of people in our class come in the top 12 who were Libby, Nick, Daniel, Maya, John, William and the rest of the class did really well to. The top 8 from each year (with two reserves) are going to compete in the inter inter zones and we wish them the best of luck there. The course was a 3.6k run throughout raroa, raroa park and the local train station. Everybody gave their best and pushed themselves to run the whole way, most people sprinted the last 100 metres. The whole of room 19 loved this event and can’t wait to do it next year!

Physics and light

On the 5th of May the amazing Room 19 learnt physics together for the first time this year!
We did some experiments with laser lights and a coin and most of them involved something as simple as water. One of the experiments was called “ disappearing spot” which involved a 20 cent coin and some water. We put a coin in the cup and stood so we could only see the rim of the cup. We then put water in the cup and while still standing in the same spot we could see the coin. This is because of light and seen as the light could refract and bend with the water it made us be able to see the coin. This experiment was the one that worked the best but the whole point of experiments is to see whether they work or not, right?

Enrichments

This term we have Enrichments, a fun series of activities such as:

Drawing and lettering, Art, Languages, Circus, Sports Referees, Music, and much more.

Most of us are really excited about enrichment starting and the 2 activities we get to do. Everyone in the school chooses what they want to do, and is then sorted into their classes with other people who chose the same thing. Enrichment takes place every Wednesday in the afternoon. We really enjoy enrichment, and are thankful for this one of many opportunities at Raroa.

ANZAC Day

ANZAC Day

This Saturday the 25th it will be the 100th anniversary for the ANZACs that fought at Gallipoli. Room 19 has been busy preparing for ANZAC day by making poppies with Wellington soldiers names on them. We made them by tracing over a picture of poppies and then wrote the soldiers information on them. Then all we had to do was colour them in. These poppies are to pay tribute to all the soldiers that died in the Wars protecting New Zealand. Lest We Forget.

Chocolate Fundraising!!

On Tuesday classes went to pick up their chocolate boxes. The options were Crunchie, Dairy milk and Caramello although everybody swapped some chocolate for other flavours so they had all three. The fundraising is to help build our new Learning street on the concrete between DPE 1 and 4. There are many different prizes from candy, skateboards, speakers, and laptops. Every day $5 is given to one person who has sold a box of chocolate. And if your class sells the most boxes of chocolate then your class will get a $300 trip to go to their chosen destination in and second and third place also get some money as well. Most people really enjoy chocolate selling as it is a fun way to get money for your school and also a fun way to hang out with your friends.

Wednesday 25 March 2015

Two weeks ago our class started an extraordinary art project. We got into pairs and got assigned to do a different part of the artwork. The original picture was an A4 piece of paper, but we are making each section an A2 piece of paper. It has been really fun drawing different things for art but it has also been a little bit challenging, because we had to link up our section with the people that have the section next to yours. It was a very enjoyable activity to do in class. I reckon we all hope to do something very similar in the classroom during the year.

Limericks

TO CELEBRATE ST. PATRICK’S DAY, ROOM 19 DECIDED TO WRITE SOME LIMERICKS ABOUT THEMSELVES AND FELLOW CLASSMATES. HERE IS AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT A LIMERICK IS:

SOME OF THE LIMERICKS WERE STORY-LIKE, SOME WERE FUNNY, SOME WERE JUST TO TAKE THE MICKEY OUT OF OUR MATES. THEY WERE ALL GREAT. WE MANAGED TO GET A FEW SAMPLES OF WHAT WE WROTE:

“THERE ONCE WAS A BOY NAMED JOHN
WHO LIKED TO EAT THE BOMBS
ONE DAY HE FELT SICK
AND HEARD A FAINT ‘TICK!’
AND WITH THAT, POOR OLD JOHN WAS GONE.”
-SEAN MACKIEWICZ

“There once was a boy named Sam
Who had a unique pet lamb
He fed it lots
from big pots
then the lamb went Kabam”
By Sam

“There was a young man named Chester
Who believed everyone else was a lesser
They bowed down to him
Worshipped him as their king
And they all knew deep down he was better”
By Chester

What limericks can you think of? Let us know in the comments below.
Bye!

Sunday 15 March 2015

For our homework we are doing something for others. Whether it is making them laugh, making them happy or even buying them flowers. some of the quests that we are doing are donating to buskers, playing board games with the elderly, staying healthy with a fitness plan and many, many more! We are going to upload many of the quests our friends have done such as singing katy perry until your lungs pop, Trying a new food that you really didn’t like before and a lot more! So far this has been going very well and has been very fun! We hope that we have been helping more people and we hope that we have made people have happier days so far whether it’s them laughing at us or its us helping them! This assignment was especially good because it had a vary of all our talents but then it also helped us get out of our comfort zone and get more confident in different areas!

Overnighter!

Overnighter!!

On Monday the 2nd of March, Room 19 and the rest of team five went to Paekakariki. When we got to the holiday camp, we heard a few rules before we got to put up our tents. Putting up the tents was tricky for some people, we had to find the right size tents for poles and vice versa, so it took a while. After setting up the tents we put on our togs and sunscreen and made our way down to the beach. The teachers spread out in the sea to set the boundaries of where we could swim. Then most of us sprinted into the water before we got  thrown in the water by Mr Morris because had said that the last person left on the beach would get thrown in. We spent around 2 hours at the beach having fun before we had to leave to go back to the campsite to cook dinner.
At camp we have to make our own dinner to eat. A lot of people made things like nachos, tacos and some had pasta or hamburgers. We would like to thank all the parents who came and helped make this wonderful experience happen.

On Monday, Team 5 went on the overnighter at Paekakariki. We did lots of fun activities such as; Spotlight, Swimming at the beach and much more. Spotlight was a really fun experience with people running around in the dark trying to find ten different colored cubes without being caught by the teachers. It was a fine hot day to go for a swim and relax at the beach. The waves were spectacular, they were becoming bigger and longer while a crowd of kids trying to jump over them. Cooking dinner was also a highlight with some dinners being delicious and some um… not so much. On the last day we went for a walk walking up steep rocky hills then onto the beach. The walk took a while with tired looking faces trudging up the hill. Once we got back to the campsite we had lunch and then got ready for the trip back to school.
